Fake vs Real WeChat Customer Service
2024-08-02
Defrauding Tricks
Members of the public have recently received phone calls from scammers claiming themselves as customer service staff of WeChat. They falsely claimed that the victims had activated “million dollar guarantee” service or “insurance” was about to expire and fees would be deducted every month from their accounts should cancellation not be requested.
When the victims denied the said activation, the bogus customer service staff would claim to help cancel the service and forward the call to bogus bank staff, seeking to obtain the victims’ online banking usernames, passwords and verification codes to steal bank account funds; or the victims would be lured to transfer their money to specific bank accounts and suffered pecuniary losses.
What is “million dollar guarantee”?
“Million dollar guarantee” is a security safeguarding service which compensates for the loss of funds due to unauthorised use of Mainland WeChat Pay accounts by others, based on the amount of losses. When using Mainland WeChat Pay, the “million dollar guarantee” service will be automatically activated free of charge, without payment of fees; application or renewal is not required. Any calls demanding payment under the name of “million dollar guarantee” are scams;
